School Extension
Tregelles Junior School, York
Due to increasing pupil numbers the client required additional teaching space for its junior department. We were presented with a challenging site above the school’s basement boiler house and sandwiched between the existing School Hall and Gymnasium.
The brief specified four classrooms, an IT Suite, Library and Cloakrooms.
The mass of the extension is divided into two blocks with hipped clay tile roofs. The extension transforms what had become a rather dreary courtyard on the north side of the school and provides a new entrance and enhanced sense of welcome.
The entrance lobby is fully glazed in order to draw light into the main circulation areas, which divide the two main teaching spaces.
